Since the North Carolina decision the other day, I’ve been seeing a lot of opinions surfacing about this. Most people that I’ve encountered tend to agree with me, that it’s a bunch of bullshit. Gays should be allowed to get married. The problem that I’ve seen is a lot of people saying, “What if we made all ‘marriages’ into civil unions and then let the church have marriage”. I’m sorry, but this is also bullshit. We shouldn’t give up a term (that everyone will still use anyway) just because some homophobes are riled up into voting. Fuck that. Equality shouldn’t have qualifiers. We shouldn’t have to give something up for everyone, just to achieve equality. Equality means bringing the people that should be equal with us (in this case I mean homosexuals, in previous times it could mean interracial couples) up to the level that the rest of us are, so we can all have the same shit. The people that voted against equality will find themselves on the wrong side of history. I promise you that.
